Tokyo Mew Mew, also know as the Mew Mews or the Mew Project, are a group of seven girls, their two overseers, and a boy. Their headquarters are located underground below Café Mew Mew.
The active Tokyo Mew Mew consists of the characters:

The girls become and are considered to be Mew Mews because their DNA has been merged with corresponding animals. Because of this process, a Mew Mark appears somewhere on their body. All the girls are known to have one on their skin except for Berry, whose Mew Mark location is unknown, and Ringo. Ryou also has a Mew Mark on his body due to an experiment with the DNA gun.
With Mew Pendants, the girls can transform into human-animal hybrids in special suits. When transformed, each member is referred to by their first name and the prefix "Mew".
At first, Ichigo, Mint, Lettuce, Pudding and Zakuro were the only members of the group. In the PS1 game for Tokyo Mew Mew, Ringo joined them (as well as in the mini-manga series Petite Mew Mew). Berry Shirayuki joined the Mew Mews and became the temporary leader in the manga Tokyo Mew Mew a la Mode.
The girls first took up the name "Tokyo Mew Mew" after their battle with a Chimera Anima was broadcast on TV all over Tokyo.
In episode 46, Ichigo's boyfriend Masaya joins the Mew Project in support.
