Deep Blue ( ディープ・ブルー , Dīpu Burū ) is the leader of the aliens in both the manga and anime series, and by extension the main antagonist of the series.

Despite his importance to the overall story, Deep Blue's origins and actions are largely left unexplained and vague across the different media, offering varying explanations, although some aspects remaining consistent throughout his many portrayals.

Story[]

Deep Blue is the leader and prophesied savior of the alien race, who is said to bring salvation to the aliens by reclaiming Earth. Being forced to abandon their planet following catastrophic events, the aliens long ventured into settling into a far less hospitable planet. Yearning to reclaim their home, Deep Blue led a crusade with the intention of resettling the alien race back into Earth. However, the Earth was now populated by humans who through careless greed, had caused devastating damage to the environment.

Enraged, Deep Blue decided to exterminate the human race in order to take over the Earth for his race with himself as its head. Through unknown means, Deep Blue travelled before any of his followers to Earth and unable to fully execute his plans at the time, incarnated in the shape of a human male of Japanese origin, Masaya Aoyama and subsequently adopted by a human family.

Although growing as a human, Aoyama while a good boy at heart, was still largely distant and detached, keeping people at arm's length while maintaining his deep seated hatred for humanity for their disregard of nature. Although Aoyama lived an otherwise normal life, Deep Blue's consciousness while largely dormant, still desired to awaken in order to carry out his genocidal agenda. For that purpose he summoned three alien fighters, Quiche, Pie and Tart. The first anime elaborates further into detailing that Deep Blue's spirit lied in an alternate dimension waiting for a proper vessel to carry his spirit, which eventually turned to be Aoyama.

As Aoyama, he interacted and had a relationship with Ichigo Momomiya a clumsy, yet loving and earnest girl who shared his worried for the environment. This romantic bond, ended up awakening an alternate persona within Aoyama known as the Blue Knight, an alter ego who had alien powers, but that was molded by its purpose to protect Ichigo from harm. The Blue Knight was initially not aware of his existence until much later, realizing that he was Aoyama.

Unfortunately, repeated battles against the aliens, ultimately caused Deep Blue's essence to resurface and ultimately awaken to his true form. In the 2nd anime series, Quiche correctly deduced the Blue Knight's identity and purpose of existence, and through an elaborate trap that ended up with Ichigo hurt, caused a mental breakdown on the Blue Knight due to his inability to protect Ichigo, ultimately causing an existential crisis that erased his identity paving the way for Deep Blue's awakening.

Following his return, Deep Blue returned to his original self, full of hatred towards humanity and intended to fully destroy them for their transgressions, utilizing his newly conjured base of operations which he intended to use as a weapon to fully eradicate humanity. Showing none of the traits of the otherwise kind Aoyama, Deep Blue attacked the Mew Mews while laying destruction in Tokyo. The Mew Mews attempted to fight back, but Ichigo who was in a state of shock, attacked her companions to defend Deep Blue, believing him to be Aoyama, but was left horrified at what she had done.

Mint snaps her out back into her senses and urges her to fight for the Earth's sake, which Ichigo ultimately resolves to. The Mew Mews storm the alien base, but are faced by Pie, Tart and a Chimera Anima (the latter of which varies across media) with the intention to stop the Mew Mews from progressing. The Mew Mews fight the aliens while paving the way for Ichigo to face Deep Blue, with both sides exhausting themselves in the ensuing battle, leaving their two respective leaders alone.

Ichigo faces Deep Blue, intending to call out into Aoyama and return him back, but Deep Blue aggressively attacks her with the intention of killing her and taking over Earth. Quiche appears and interrupts Deep Blue, openly commiting treason against his savior as his obsession with Ichigo had turned into genuine love and decided to defeat his leader to protect Ichigo. Although Quiche put a brave fight he was ultimately defeated and slain by Deep Blue.

Ichigo's sorrow at the tragedy that unfolded ultimately caused Aoyama to revert backm full of grief and guilt over the atrocities he had commited as Deep Blue. The two eventually realize that Mew Aqua lies within Aoyama's body, prompting Aoyama to attempt suicide in order to use the Mew Aqua to revert all the destruction he caused. Deep Blue, however begun wrestling for control over the body while attempting to kill Ichigo. The ensuing events vary from the different portrayals but follow a somewhat similar course:

In the manga, Aoyama seals Ichigo in a barrier while Deep Blue keeps causing destruction. Between cries of desperation from Ichigo who doesn't want to be the only one spared from the carnage, Aoyama gains the necessary fortitude to overpower Deep Blue and stab himself with his sword, releasing the Mew Aqua's power reverting Deep Blue's actions. In grief Ichigo kisses Aoyama, transferring all her powers which revives him, but leaves Ichigo comatose until Aoyama kisses her. With the fight over, Ichigo's powers disappear and she returns into a normal human. With both sides making peace, the aliens retreat with a remnant of Mew Aqua, eventually returning to their planet where it is hinted the Mew Aqua was able to make it a hospitable place similar to Earth.

In the first anime, Aoyama's spirit holds Deep Blue back who while fighting back against Ichigo's attack is ultimately overpowered by Ichigo who was powered up by the Mew Mews' last trace of power and erased from existence although this also kills Aoyama in the process as the Mew Aqua's energy is released, restoring all the damage caused by Deep Blue. Ichigo kisses Aoyama, bestowing all her power, which revives Aoyama, but leaves her comatose. The Mew Mews gather around and are left in sorrow at Ichigo's condition. The aliens appear before them and making peace, take the remnant of the Mew Aqua to restore their planet. The Aliens teleport everyone away from the crumbling base, and board their ship while programming Deep Blue's base to disintegrate itself so as to prevent it from falling into Tokyo and cause a calamity. The aliens depart to their planet where it is hinted it is restored to hospitable levels.

In the second anime, as Deep Blue battles against Ichigo with the intention of killing her, Aoyama's spirit tries to disuade him, elaborating on their shared memories and how, Deep Blue should be aware of Ichigo's benevolent nature and genuine care for the Earth and nature. As Ichigo keeps clasing with Deep Blue's energy blast, she slowly approaches Deep Blue attempting to grasp his hand while voicing her belief that while the road ahead is difficult, she will keep trying no matter what until both races can coexist and save them all. Deep Blue thus has a change of heart about erasing humanity. A distraught Pie impulsively stabs Deep Blue to release the Mew Aqua, creating a portal between both planets, signaling to the aliens the time for an all assault attack on Earth. Ichigo desperately embraces Aoyama, and both her and his spirit interact. Masha teleports and becomes a rod, allowing the two to use the Mew Aqua's power to undo Deep Blue's destruction while revitalizing the alien's planet, making it verdant and full of life, ultimately causing the aliens to desist from their attack, while Deep Blue's spirit disappears being glad to have met Ichigo. Aoyama is left comatose, but awakens following Ichigo's tearful pleas. With both sides making peace, the aliens return to their home planet, leaving in peace while tending to farms and developing nature. Through unknown means, however, communication between both ultimately remained active.

Appearance[]

Deep Blue's appearance is that of a pale skinned member of the alien race with long, jet black hair and crystaline blue eyes. He dons the Blue Knight's blue outfit and uses his sword in battle.

Pesonality[]

Deep Blue is generally portrayed as a cold, ruthless yet detached individual with a messiah complex. Believing himself absolute, Deep Blue has no qualms about spreading genocidal destruction, kill anyone who gets in his way, even his fellow alien kin and considering his will to be ultimate. Deep Blue is deeply self-engrandoised, speaking to others in belittling terms, and showing complete disregard and contempt for his alter egos, believing them worthless.

Both the manga and first anime portray Deep Blue in a more sadistic light, gloating about the destruction they unleash in Tokyo. The first anime shows, Deep Blue as more self-centered, intending to reclaim the Earth for himself, while mocking everyone as inferiors. The second anime, portrays Deep Blue in a more human way, and putting a heavier emphasis on his scorn for humanity's treatment of Earth while trying to bring his kin back to their original planet. He's, nonetheless ultimately convinced by both Ichigo and Aoyama to desist from needless violence and seek a more peaceful solution. In the end, Deep Blue disappears in peace, grateful to Ichigo for her kindness.

Powers and abilities[]

The Blue Knight is Deep Blue as Ichigo's mysterious protector. Deep Blue wields the same sword as the Blue Knight, seeing as Deep Blue is one of his alter egos, but he uses a blast attack that somewhat resembles blue lightning. He can shoot fire energy from his palms and he has the ability to fly and teleport himself wherever he wants.

Trivia[]

  • Though Deep Blue is the series primary antagonist, he does not actually appear until the end of the sixth volume of the manga.
  • To keep the true identity of Deep Blue a secret in the anime, his voice actor's name is shown only as a question mark until the forty-ninth episode when his identity is revealed; after which the credits are changed to list Megumi Ogata, who also voices Masaya and the Blue Knight.
  • Deep Blue is one of the few characters in the Mew Mew Power dub version whose name remains unchanged. His role is slightly modified from that of a savior for the aliens to his being a destructive force that wants to do nothing but destroy the Earth, causing the aliens to turn against him.
